Melatonin analogues for cancer treatmen
The researchers have shown that agomelatine (a compound analogous to melatonine) is effective in treatments against cancers, mainly against colon cancer. This compound acts by inhibiting tumor growth so it can have an oncostatic/cytostatic function and be used as the basis of drugs to prevent, improve, alleviate and/or treat cancer.
Advantages and Benefits
Unlike melatonin and 5-fluorouracil, the agomelatine can inhibit cell growth when gene p53, which is involved in tumor suppression, is mutated (50% of human cancer), so the number of treatable patients increases.
It has been checked that the effect of agomelatine against cell growth in vivo is 10 times higher than that produced by 5-fluorouracil, the first line of treatment for colon cancer nowadays, apart from agomelatine has less side effects than that.
Apart from the common routes of administration, it can be administered as a nutraceutical compound for treating different types of cancer, mainly colon cancer.
